What is PicSort?
PicSort is a handy utility for automatically organizing large number of files such as collection of text digests, pictures and sound files. When you activate PicSort by drag/drop, PicSort determines if there are files with identical prefixes in their file name and will automatically move the files into new subfolders.
PicSort can also filter out files containing specific strings in the filename and move them into new subfolders. For example you can use PicSort to automatically search a folder and move all files containing ".jpg" in it's file name into a new subfolder.
How to run PicSort?
There are two ways to activate the program.
1) Drag & drop
You can drag & drop the folder containing files to be sorted onto the PicSort icon or you can drag & drop a file from the folder that you wish to sort and the entire folder will be sorted. M
2) Use the Open... menu command
Double click the PicSort icon and select Open ... Use the dialog box to select a file from the folder that you wish to sort.
3)To customize your configuration of PicSort, select Preferences from the File Menu.
Sorting Rules
PicSort process your folder in two steps: Sorting and Filtering.
You can specify which of the two goes first in the preference dialogbox.
Sorting
PicSort arranges all files in alphbetical order. It then looks for a series of files that have a number of identical characters in their prefix. The required number of identical characters can be changed in the preference dialog. If a series of files match the above criteria and the number of files in the serie is greater then the minimum number required, then PicSort will create a folder and move these files into the new folder.
Use the Ignore number option to let PicSort ignore differences between two file names if the only difference between the two in their prefix are numbers. For example if the Ignore number option is turned on, the following file names will be considered to be in the same series even if the minimium character required is set to 5. Since the fifth character in each file is a number PicSort considers it identical and will create a folder named File and move all three files into it.

Filtering
Use the Filter button in the preference dialogbox to open the filter dialogbox. Enter your search string on the left side and the corresponding folder name you wish PicSort to create for all matching files. For example, you can use the filtering option to separate files with .txt ,.zip,snd, .jpg, .gif extensions.
PicSort will not sort recursively. It will only recognize and sort files within your specified folder and ignore all folders within that folder. The maximium number of files that PicSort can handle at one time is 400.
